2002 Preseason:  Almost by default, Smith looks to be the starting middle linebacker this season.  With LB Troy Asbell plucked off the roster by the expansion Ottawa Renegades, Smith is the lone veteran linebacker on the team.  Last year showed flashes of being a steady 'backer, but all too often was lost in the sea of humanity to be an effective tackler.

2001 Preseason:  Spent last season rotating with fellow LB Bamidele Ali at rush end.  Riders may shift Smith back to linebacker to help out with run defence.

2000 Regular Season:  Riders are looking for good things to come from Smith this season.  Problem is, can he come back from a dislocated hip, a very rare football injury?  Suffered through a virus during training camp.  When healthy, Riders would like him to be the middle linebacker.

1999 Regular Season:  Was the best of the rookie linebackers brought in to shore up a poor Rider defence.  Clear early on, he would make the team.  Was enjoying an up-and-down rookie season.  Dislocated his hip and faces a tough rehabilitation program to prepare for 2000.

Training Camp Scouting Report:

A leader on the Crimson Tide defence.
Shows good hustle and tackling ability.
Can he invoke memories of another great Rider linebacker from Alabama, Eddie Lowe, who recommended him to Riders?
Can play inside or out, which will enhance his chances of making the team.
